About the Book:

The flu pandemic of 1918 took millions of souls within a few short weeks.

Except it wasn't flu and death gave them back.

Seventeen-year-old Ella copes the best she can; caring for her war-injured father, scrubbing the floors, and slaying the undead that attack the locals. ‘Vermin’ they're called, like rats they spread pestilence with their bite. Ella's world collides with another when she nearly decapitates a handsome stranger, who is very much alive.

Seth deMage, the new Duke of Leithfield, has returned to his ancestral home with a mission from the War Office — to control the plague of vermin in rural Somerset. He needs help; he just didn't expect to find it in a katana-wielding scullery maid.
Working alongside Seth blurs the line between their positions, and Ella glimpses a future she never dreamed was possible. But in overstepping society's boundaries, Ella could lose everything – home, head and her heart…

My Review

Ella, the Slayer is a retelling of Cinderella and zombies which is what first pulled me in. Although, I must admit that the beginning was a bit slow and hard to get into but afterwards grows rather interesting. Ella the protagonist is no damsel in distress, she's a zombie slayer. She protects her estate and her people even when she believes she'll be damned for it.

I liked Ella, she was strong-willed and had her priorities straight. Even when she was being mistreated daily by her step-mother and step-sister, she never wavered in protecting people from the undead. And although she does fall head over heels for the prince, (because even in a zombie filled world there has to be a prince) she doesn't let that become her weakness.

The romance between her and Seth felt like it went all too fast but that may just be me. Since I never felt like I really got to know Seth, it felt like there was still a lot more to learn about him. And even though he was kind and sweet, I never really felt a connection or spark between him and Ella.

Overall, this was a great take on the classic fairy tale that is Cinderella. It had romance, a badass heroine, and enough action to keep you interested!

  1. It's interesting, most have said it's a slow burn romance but today both reviews though the romance was fast. Fascinating how different people take it. Thank you for hosting a tour stop and sharing your thoughts!

  2. OOh nice! This is a new to me one but I love a good fairy tale retelling! Especially ones with a twist! I guess the whole insta love can be expected even in fairy tale retellings, because when you look at all the classics, all it takes is a single look and BAM! There's true love going on! It's eyeroll worthy these days, but still sweet, in a sense. If not idiotic at times! LOL!

Great review! Will definitely keep my eye out for this one!
