Waiting on Wednesday: Reign of Shadows by Sophie Jordan

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Breaking the Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This weeks book that I'm desperate to get my hands on:

Reign of Shadows by Sophie Jordan

Publication: February 9, 2016

Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy

Goodreads Summary

Seventeen years ago, an eclipse cloaked the kingdom of Relhok in perpetual darkness. In the chaos, an evil chancellor murdered the king and queen and seized their throne. Luna, Relhok’s lost princess, has been hiding in a tower ever since. Luna’s survival depends on the world believing she is dead.

But that doesn’t stop Luna from wanting more. When she meets Fowler, a mysterious archer braving the woods outside her tower, Luna is drawn to him despite the risk. When the tower is attacked, Luna and Fowler escape together. But this world of darkness is more treacherous than Luna ever realized.

With every threat stacked against them, Luna and Fowler find solace in each other. But with secrets still unspoken between them, falling in love might be their most dangerous journey yet.

With lush writing and a star–crossed romance, Reign of Shadows is Sophie Jordan at her best.

Why I'm desperate for Reign of Shadows:

I'm not gonna lie that cover is soooo pretty and it's what first made me want it so much! But when I read the summary and saw the star-crossed romance part, I was a total goner!

Stacking The Shelves is hosted by Tynga's Reviews  and is all about sharing the books you’re adding to your shelves be it in virtual form or physical. You can include books you’ve won, bought, borrowed from the library or review books.

P.S. I post most of my STS at the end of each month.

In the month of July I.....

Ironskin (Ironskin #1) by Tina Connolly

My BookOutlet order finally came! I had a coupon so these books came out super cheap which I'm glad for. I'd been wanting to read these books for quite some time, especially The Madman's Daughter trilogy! As for the doll leaning on my books, isn't she just the cutest?! I couldn't resist buying her!

For Review

Ella, The Slayer by A.W. Exley
Nameless by Jennifer Jenkins
Magno Girl by Joe Canzano

I can never resist retellings, so of course Ella, The Slayer was no different especially since it's about Cinderella and Zombies! As for Nameless, the summary sounded like my kind of read and some of the reviews I read made me want it so bad. Magno Girl just sounded like a fun superhero read which is why I picked it up! And the last two totally caught me off guard, they were sent to me by Penguin and that surprised me since it's my first time receiving unsolicited review copies. Although, I'm not a big realistic fiction reader, (probably just haven't found any that I really love) I have to admit that they look like a fun and humorous summer read.

This Monstrous Thing by Mackenzi Lee

I was so HAPPY to find this in my mail box, I had entered a giveaway for it but not really thinking I was going to win! But I'm so glad I did! I mean its a retelling of Frankenstein...STEAMPUNK FRANKENSTEIN! *head explodes*

That's all for this week! Leave a comment and/or link to your Stacking the Shelves. I'll make sure to check them out too. Thanks for stopping by! Have an awesome weekend!

Princess of Thorns by Stacey Jay Review

Publisher: Delacorte Press
Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy, Romance, Retellings, Adventure
Release Date: December 9, 2014
Pages: 400

Goodreads Summary

Game of Thrones meets the Grimm's fairy tales in this twisted, fast-paced romantic fantasy-adventure about Sleeping Beauty's daughter, a warrior princess who must fight to reclaim her throne.

Though she looks like a mere mortal, Princess Aurora is a fairy blessed with enhanced strength, bravery, and mercy yet cursed to destroy the free will of any male who kisses her. Disguised as a boy, she enlists the help of the handsome but also cursed Prince Niklaas to fight legions of evil and free her brother from the ogre queen who stole Aurora's throne ten years ago.

Will Aurora triumph over evil and reach her brother before it's too late? Can Aurora and Niklaas break the curses that will otherwise forever keep them from finding their one true love?

My Review

I admit that at the beginning of Princess of Thorns I debated on whether or not to drop this book. But you know what? I'm glad I didn't because as much as some of the character's infuriated me, I still found myself enjoying this book. I especially loved how Stacey Jay incorporated other fairy tales that I know and love and twisted them (*coughs* The Wild Swans and Rapunzel).

Aurora is the daughter of Sleeping Beauty who died giving her fairy gifts in order to protect her from the evil Troll Queen not knowing the full extent of these gifts. Now Aurora's stuck with enhanced strength, bravery, and mercy (which to me sounds waaay more useful than beauty and elegance) but the downside is that she's also cursed to take the free will of any male that kisses her. Although I loved how strong and dedicated to her loved ones Aurora was, after all in order to rescue her brother Jor she decides to dress like a boy and gather an army. At times she also made me want to throw the book across the room, (I didn't because it's a borrowed library book) she had some serious trust issues and made some really stupid and selfish mistakes. But that just made her a realistic and flawed character which I seriously enjoyed!

And on to Niklaas the infuriating love interest who is set on marrying Aurora because he also has a nasty curse that will come to pass unless he marries a princess before he turns eighteen. I'll be honest as much as I loved Niklaas he also made me want to smack him so much because of the things that came out of his mouth and how narcissistic he was. But of course he does grow as a character which made me appreciate him more but SERIOUSLY how could he not tell Aurora was a girl. He even questioned how girlish she was and there were SO  many signs I mean come on! But their friendship that slowly bloomed into love totally made up for it, so I'm not complaining.

Princess of Thorns is full of action, adventure, character development, romance and so many secrets and curses that just made me enjoy it even more. And although close to the end it fell like everything fell into place rather easily, I didn't mind so much. I'm glad everything turned out well!

Waiting on Wednesday: Rebel of the Sands by Alwyn Hamilton

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Breaking the Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This weeks book that I'm desperate to get my hands on:

Rebel of the Sands by Alwyn Hamilton

Publication: March 8, 2016

Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy, Adventure

Goodreads Summary

She’s more gunpowder than girl—and the fate of the desert lies in her hands.

Mortals rule the desert nation of Miraji, but mystical beasts still roam the wild and barren wastes, and rumor has it that somewhere, djinni still practice their magic. But there's nothing mystical or magical about Dustwalk, the dead-end town that Amani can't wait to escape from.

Destined to wind up "wed or dead," Amani’s counting on her sharpshooting skills to get her out of Dustwalk. When she meets Jin, a mysterious and devastatingly handsome foreigner, in a shooting contest, she figures he’s the perfect escape route. But in all her years spent dreaming of leaving home, she never imagined she'd gallop away on a mythical horse, fleeing the murderous Sultan's army, with a fugitive who's wanted for treason. And she'd never have predicted she'd fall in love with him...or that he'd help her unlock the powerful truth of who she really is.

Why I'm desperate for Rebel of the Sands:

I don't know what pulled me in the most the cover or the summary, it just looks so mystical and wondrous and I love it! And the summary promises fantasy and adventure plus some romance which is just icing on the cake. I know I'm being irrational but I'm all up for a handsome and mysterious stranger whisking me away on his mythical horse and we ride off into the sunset. *coughs* Fictionally, of course!

*looks at release date again*

Who Are You: School 2015 ~ Korean Drama

Name: Who Are You: School 2015
Language: Korean with English subtitles
Episodes: 16

The lives of identical girls with very similar names – one who disappears without a trace and one who loses her memory – collide in unexpected ways. Lee Eun Bi grows up in an orphanage and deals with the relentless bullying from a group of girls at her school. Go Eun Byul attends Segang High School, a top-notch school in Gangnam, but disappears without a trace during a school field trip. As Eun Bi tries to escape from her miserable life and ends up in the hospital with no memories of her past, Eun Byul’s mother thinks Eun Bi is her lost daughter and takes her back to live her life as Eun Byul. As Eun Bi tries to recover her lost memories, can she discover what happened to the real Eun Byul and why she looks so much like the missing girl?

My Review

Who Are You: School 2015 is mostly a mystery thriller filled with secrets, romance, and so much suspense that I couldn't stop myself from watching it, no matter how much anger and heartache it gave me, I couldn't seem to help myself. But be warned this is no light K-drama and though there is romance, there are no kissing scenes only hugs (in case you expected or wanted any).

Lee Eun Bi is the main protaganist of this drama and honestly I felt for her so much, she is bullied so viciously and horrifically and yet no one does anything about it. And although she tries to stay positive it comes to a point where she can't take it anymore and decides to escape by commiting suicide which really broke my heart because that is so not the answer....But instead of the escape she wanted, she ends up in a hospital with no memories, where she's mistaken for Go Eun Byul a girl who looks just like her and has been missing for over a week. Not knowing any better she starts living Eun Byul's life, while trying to piece her memories together.

Enter her two love interests Yi Ahn and Tae Gwang! Yi Ahn is Eun Byul's childhood friend who is also in love with her, while Tae Gwang is someone whom she finds herself befriending without meaning to. These two boys can't help but fall in love with Eun Byul and much to my dismay I can't seem to stop myself either. Yi Ahn would do anything for Eun Byul but so would Tae Gwang which just makes it oh so much harder to choose between them. Their both so caring and I just....I won't say who she chooses but gaahhh!!! This is why I don't like love triangles!!!!

The plot was full of so much suspense and mystery that it kept me on edge, only feeding me bits and pieces of the truth. Which seriously killed me, there are so many secrets and lies and that just made me so anxious! The character's were a whole other story, I hated some (mostly So-Young) and other's I just had so many mixed feelings for. And although I really enjoyed this drama, the ending was sort of disappointing but that doesn't mean I regretted watching it. I still loved the journey it took me on!

Drama Quotes

"Trying to set things right after telling a lie, is a very difficult thing to do. You may lose a lot. Many people may point their fingers at you. But if you ignore and look the other way, it will get harder and harder to be truthful. You'll end up choosing cowardice."

"If you don't pull out the thorn, the wound will eventually get worse and worse."

"We’re eighteen, so we live every day as if it’s our last—loving and hating fiercely. It’s an age where we falter and get hurt easily, and are hurting more than anyone. Despite that, the reason we can look back on that time and say we were happy is one person’s warm outstretched hand. Not more, not less, but just one person—if we each approach one friend who’s crying and stretch out a hand like this, there’s nothing that I—we—can’t endure. It’s okay. You can hurt. Because you’re eighteen."

I seriously loved the OSTs that this drama used, the songs are below in case you're curious!

Weekly Recap #1

Hey guys, I know I haven't posted much and I'm totally sorry about that. But it was totally worth it because it gave me time to read a lot of great books aaand binge watch Asian drama's that I've been missing out on and putting off for quite some time. But that also means that now I have quite the amount of reviews to write. Oops!

Anyways these are just recaps on the books and shows I watched last week that I plan on reviewing later this week.

Princess of Thorns by Stacey Jay

I really loved this book it had all the genre's I love and a kickass heroine whom I liked but also made me want to strangle her along with her love interest. They were hilarious together but could also be complete buttheads towards each other. Gahhh!!

End of Days by Susan Ee

Yep, I finally read the End of Days the conclusion to the amazing trilogy that I've loved since the beginning. This book was full of action, romance, death and a whole lot of other stuff but don't ask me yet. I'm  still in mourning over my favorite trilogy coming to an end. *wipes tears* RAFFE!!

I was really excited for this book because apart from that amazing cover, the summary totally had me wanting it. And although I did enjoy the twin sister's relationship and the evil ghost hunting part of the story. The supporting character's were what depressed me a bit. They were there for most of the story and yet they just sort of blended into the wall. And don't get me started on the romance.*sigh*

Last week I started watching Who Are You: School 2015  (Korean drama) and to be honest it wasn't quite what I expected but as soon as I watched the second episode I couldn't stop myself from watching the rest. It's full of mystery and romance (also a whole lot of secrets) and it just had me at the edge of my seat.  I'd say more but I plan on reviewing it on Monday but just know it was pretty interesting! Stay tuned!

Another show I watched was Boss & Me (Chinese drama) with my sister and it was so romantic and hilarious and I loved it....but close to the end it started to drag on and that made me want to hit my head against the wall repeatedly but I still loved it because it did make me laugh a lot. Yep, still not sure how many stars though...

And last but definitely not least I started watching the Scholar Who Walks the Night! Although to be honest I started it because of Lee Joon-Gi and Lee Soo-Hyuk. I mean just look at those handsome face's!

Lee Joon-Gi (plays the main character Kim Sung Yeol whose a sort of recently made vampire but filled with vengeance towards Gwi)

Lee Soo-Hyuk (plays Gwi the evil vampire in the show but totally hot, I have to admit.)
Who can resist them especially as vampires!? *swoons*

In case you're wondering the main girl character(because of course there's romance) who will fall in love with Sung Yeol is Jo Yang-Sun (played by Lee Yoo-Bi) who cross-dresses as a man to sell books in order to keep her family alive.

Aaaanyways athough the first episode was full of death and really sad moments, it kept me wanting more so its no surprise that as soon as I watched the next two episodes I was hooked but its just airing so there's only 4 episodes out which totally sucks but I'll keep you guys posted. FYI I'm giving way more info on this one because it doesn't stop airing until Septemper which means I won't write a review until then. *cries*

P.S. This is why I really love watching historical drama's apart from the amazing actor's and storyline, the costumes are so pretty especially the women hanboks! So gorgeous!

Thanks for stopping by!

Undercover Supporting Actress ~ Thailand Drama

Name: Undercover Supporting Actress/Nang Rai Sai Lab
Language: Thailand with English subtitles
Episodes: 13

My Review

Action, romance, and hilarity ensues when the number one villain actress Zoe is taken in by the police for a crime she didn't commit but much to her dismay has strong evidence pointing to her. And the only way the police will keep this quiet is if she works as a spy for them to capture a Drug lord. Zoe doesn't want to be a spy but she has no other option than to agree.

Zoe is good at playing the villain on-screen but when it comes to being off-screen she's the most loyal and nicest person ever (unless you get on her bad side) and also a major klutz. I really liked Zoe's character because although she was kind, she wasn't afraid to put people in their place when they were being really mean and rude and I just loved her for it (these kinds of girl character's are rare in Thailand dramas). Although, Zoe's character was amazing she also had her flaws and one of them was being too headstrong which was also the reason why she clashed a lot with her love interest.

Her love interest Naruebate or Bate for short is the team leader of the team that is assigned to capture Richard the Drug lord and also the most stubborn person in the world. Which is why he and Zoe get off on the wrong foot right after they meet. He finds her completely infuriating for never following his orders, especially when he explicitly tells her not to do something but she ends up doing it anyways.

The romance between Zoe and Bate was great, you could totally see the chemistry right from the beginning. What I loved most was their character's development while falling in love, they matured but were still pretty playful and just loved to drive each other crazy. I loved seeing them tease each other, it was pretty hilarious to watch. I especially loved the scene where Bate scared Zoe since he knew she was afraid of ghosts. Hilarious!

Although Zoe isn't that happy to be forced into becoming a spy she soon finds out that although it is dangerous, it can also be thrilling and feel good to know your ridding the world of at least one evil. I'll admit that although the action scenes were pretty cheesy, I couldn't help but find myself enjoying this drama. I especially loved seeing Zoe go undercover as a spy and dressing up in different costumes. My favorite scene was when she had to dress up as a guy to go to a gay bar, the whole scene had me in stitches.

If you're looking for a good spy drama with romance and action, then look no further this drama is definitely for you!

Rating: 4 stars
