17 year old Ember Denning has made an art of isolating herself. She prefers the dead. She spends her days skipping school in old cemeteries and her nights hiding from her alcoholic father at the funeral home where she works. When her own father dies, Ember learns her whole life is a lie. Standing in the cemetery that’s been her sanctuary, she’s threatened by the most beautiful boy she’s ever seen and rescued by two people who claim to be her family. They say she’s special, that she has a supernatural gift like them…they just don’t know exactly what it is.

They take her to a small Florida town, where Ember’s life takes a turn for the weird. She’s living with her reaper cousins, an orphaned werewolf pack, a faery and a human genius. Ember’s powers are growing stronger, morphing into something bigger than anything anybody anticipated. Ember has questions but nobody has answers. Nobody knows what she is. They only know her mysterious magical gift is trying to kill them and that beautiful dangerous boy from the cemetery may be the only thing standing between her and death.

As Ember’s talents are revealed so are the secrets her father hid and those in power who would seek to destroy her. What’s worse, saving Ember has put her cousins in danger and turned her friend’s lives upside down. Ember must learn to embrace her magic or risk losing the family she’s pieced together.

My Review

I'm not sure where to begin, this book caught me completely off guard! I expected a cliched paranormal romance book but what I read was so much better. Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things is about Ember a 17 year old, who thinks she's just a human whose father just died and her biggest worry is being sent off to foster care. But she doesn't realize how foster care is the least of her problems especially after a beautiful but frightening boy threatens her life, only to be saved by a guy and a girl claiming to be her cousins.

Ember is by far my favorite character, that's not to say that I didn't love the other character's because I did. But I just really loved watching her character blossom, she was quite with drawn into herself at first and I really liked seeing her slowly come out of that rock she was living in and befriend the rest of the character's. And boy were there quite a a lot of characters and yes I shipped them all. Especially Kai and Rhys, they just had this amazing sexual tension that I just couldn't help but blush every time they were together. Long story short Kai is Ember's cousin who is also a Reaper and he's in love with Rhys a werewolf. Yep it's pretty complicated but not as complicated as to the guy who Ember falls in love with.

Enter Mace the guy who makes it his life's mission to irritate Ember with those full lips and gorgeous face  and who can blame her but there's a small problem he's immortal and a soul eater. Okay so it's not so small a problem but it's not like Ember has much of a choice. He's the only one who can save her from herself and those that are after her....That is if he's on her side or not...

Honestly, this book had me biting my nails quite a bit, there were so many secrets and mysteries unfolding and so many paranormal creatures everywhere I turned and I just...loved it! This book kept me at the edge of my seat, there was death, betrayal, otherworldly creatures, and romance. You name it and it was in there! Not to mention the ships, one in particular I also have to mention are Tristen whose a Banshee and Quinn a very smart human. Both of whom went through a lot and need to get more scenes in the next book. A whole lot of things happen to the character's in this book and it just makes my heart ache thinking about it. I really need the sequel, like now!
